I love being home on Mondays because I always need a catch up day after the weekend! I usually have big plans of what I’ll get accomplished (on Saturday, at least), but it’s almost inevitable that the kiddos won’t sleep those nights (thanks a lot, guys), or someone will be sick, we’ll be busy with friends or family, or I’ll just
be really lazy prioritize rest and family time. Sometimes all of the above. Maybe a bigger project will get done, but usually regular stuff like laundry and dishes will get pushed aside.
Dishes… Seriously, how does such a small family make so many dirty dishes?! It seems there is always a mountain of them and keeping up is always a struggle!
Until very recently, whenever I do get caught up and can once again see my counter and the bottom of the sink, I would say to myself, “From now on I’ll just wash the dishes as we use them, even if it’s just a couple things. I won’t let it pile up like this. I’ll stay on top of it. ” But for some reason I never could and I didn’t know why… until one day not so very long ago…
It was probably a Monday. Dishes were piled high. My mom was here. (Both my mom and my mom-in-law are like dish fairies. When they’re around dirty dishes magically transform into sparkling, gleaming clean dishes. Maybe that should be my dish washing strategy… just invite them over when the sink gets full! Just kidding, that would be taking advantage. No but seriously…) Ahem. So anyhow. Mom was here and I’m sure she was up to her elbows in sudsy water scrubbing off a weekend’s worth of hardened food particles. I was probably lamenting the constant piles of dirty dishes and trying to make excuses for myself for why I couldn’t keep up with them. Then mom gave me this little suggestion that has made a world of difference:
When you have a spare minute, focus on putting away the clean dishes in the drying rack.
All this time I thought the key was to wash up a few more dishes when I have the time (which still needs to happen), but what usually happens is that my drying rackis full… so I don’t have a place to put wet dishes… so I don’t wash them… so the dishes pile up.
BUT… when I put away the dry dishes in the rack and it’s sitting there empty, when I do have a spare minute it’s easy and inviting to wash up a few more!
See that? Same dishes. Different perspective. Different outcome.
